How can we confront the wounds of violence and speak of hope for the future?
In this lecture — “Translating Violence and the Possibility of Hope” — Jin Y. Park, William Fraser McDowell Chair Professor at American University and former President of the American Academy of Religion, begins with the 1980 Gwangju Democratic Uprising and Han Kang’s Human Acts. Drawing on Eastern and Western — especially Korean and other non-Western — philosophies, the talk explores how violence might be “translated” into a language of hope through nonviolent resistance and “reflexive engagement.” Participants are invited to reflect on how Korean philosophy can address contemporary global challenges and imagine paths of dignity, healing, and hope.
